The American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA) is a service organization founded on July 26, 1922 in Atlanta, Georgia, by 8 visionary Greek American businessmen. Its mission is to support Greek-American charities, causes, and communities. It works closely with the Greek Orthodox Church. Its ladies’ auxiliary, the Daughters of Penelope, was founded in 1929. It supports two youth groups, the Sons of Pericles (established in 1926) and the Maids of Athena (1930). The AHEPA was founded as a fraternity in Atlanta, Georgia in July 1922 following growing attacks on Greek Americans and Greek American businesses by the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) and others. Its initial mission was to promote the image of Greeks in America, assist them with citizenship and to fight against KKK attacks. With the full assimilation of Greek Americans, its mission evolved toward philanthropy, education, and promoting and preserving the Hellenic identity of the Greek Americans.
Since its founding, AHPEA has worked to eradicate bigotry and racism that has permeated in society. With over 400 chapters worldwide, AHPEA promotes true values of ancient Greece, which involve Hellenism, Education, Civic Responsibility, Family & Individual Excellence and Philanthropy. AHPEA is committed to advancing these ideals in our communities & neighborhoods.
Locally, the James L. Karthan AHEPA Lodge #192 is involved in many things. We have a Highway Clean Up Day, Sponsor Bingo Events and Glendi's, contribute to scholarship funds, and for the first time in 2019, a toy drive and holiday light tour. More recently I have started an initiative that will begin raising money for our service dog national program. This program was started in 2016 and has already raised $750,000 and has sponsored over 35 service dogs placed with veterans. I would like to see our local chapter get more involved with veteran causes I would greatly appreciate your involvement.
I invite you to join AHPEA in continuing these goals and ideals. Doing so will enable AHPEA to achieve leadership in championing our cause of education thru scholarships and the advantages of higher education. Like many things these days there is a cost associated with membership and our annual dues are only $52. With this though you get to be a part of a network of like-minded individuals here locally but nationally in addition to receiving our District's seasonal publication The Fez and our seasonal National Headquarters magazine, The AHEPAN. I welcome your questions and comments in the hope that you will join us in continuing our quest for a better tomorrow.
Fraternally,
The Chapter Officers of the James L. Karthan AHEPA Chapter 192
